Amicable: (of relations between people) having a spirit of friendliness; without serious disagreement or rancor.
An amicable wife is not an enemy to her husband but a partner who has a mind of her own.
The work world is adversarial enough and I do not want my husband to think that I am just one more person he has to fight. However, I do not have to submit to my husband’s opinion as if my difference of opinion means nothing, nor do I have to express my opinion the moment I think it.
It is not that my difference of opinion doesn’t matter, but I have learned through experience that expressing what I think doesn’t always make things better, and that there are often more important issues to deal with than me seeing things differently.
There is no one I would rather disagree with than my husband, and I like that we have different views and can discuss them in a friendly way; we also have a lot of the same views which makes life much easier than disagreeing on everything; and when we do have heated disagreements, it’s not the end of the world but often the beginning of a new understanding since both of us change as we grow older together.
When all is said and done, my husband and I are partners and on the same team, and it does not do us any good to be unfriendly to each other since neither of us is going anywhere.
