Dependable: trustworthy and reliable.
I am not a perfect woman, and I made plenty of mistakes in my relationship before my husband and I were married; 2021 marks our 22nd anniversary since we first met, and it will be our third year of marriage; the funny thing is our relationship has improved as a legally married couple.
When I was just a cohabitating girlfriend, I didn’t have a legal obligation to him, even though I loved him, and he didn’t have a legal obligation to me; I used to put a higher value on being dependable to employers and achieving career goals than I did on being a dependable girlfriend.
I never thought a piece of paper could make such a huge difference, but it really does; working as a court reporter and seeing divorces up close made a big difference on my perspective of marriage as well.
Without a legally binding contract it’s hard to hold someone accountable for not being dependable, especially since they aren’t committed enough to form a legal contract to begin with.Personally, I don’t blame people for not being dependable when they aren’t married because, well, they aren’t married, and they have no legal obligation to the other person.
Everything happens for a reason though, including mistakes; the important thing is to learn from the mistakes and leave the past in the past, which is why I now place my marriage as the top priority in my life so that my husband can fully depend on me.
Granted, sometimes I feel like a failure as a so-called writer since writing is not my top priority and I don’t aspire to make money at it, but at this point I want my main focus to be on my marriage since other endeavors will always be there.
After everything I’ve been through, I feel very fortunate to have a husband who takes care of me and who depends on me to take care of him, our home, and our cats.
